Fluke Networks SMC-9-SCSC Singlemode Launch Cable (160 m, SC to SC)
The Fluke Networks SMC-9-SCSC Singlemode Launch Cable is a 160-meter OTDR launch cord designed for accurate fiber optic testing with the OptiFiber Pro OTDR. Built with 9/125 µm single-mode fiber, it enables accurate measurement of insertion loss and reflectance at the first and last connections of a fiber link while reducing measurement uncertainty through the use of reference-grade fiber and connectors.
Unlike other OTDR launch reels, the SMC-9-SCSC is housed in a compact, rugged zippered case that allows technicians to deploy only the amount of cable needed, helping maintain a clean and organized work area. Ideal for testing OS1 and OS2 single-mode fiber networks, the launch cable features a UPC polish/finish, with a SC connector on each end, providing exceptional durability and reliable connectivity for demanding field and data center environments.

Key Facts
- Enables accurate testing of UPC connections and supports OptiFiber Pro with modules featuring SmartLoop technology
- Meets Telcordia GR-326-CORE durability requirements, including thermal, humidity, vibration, flex, impact, and salt-spray testing
- Reference-grade fiber and connectors minimize launch cord influence on OTDR measurement results
- When used in sets of three (launch, loopback, receive), the cables support SmartLoop testing to TIA-568.3-D standards. SmartLoop technology test two fibers in one tests while providing individual pass, fail and bi-directionally averaged results (See Versiv Manual pdf)
- Helps OTDRs accurately measure insertion loss and reflectance of the first and last fiber connections in a link
- Packaged in a case that is also known as launch packs or Dead Zone Eliminators used for OTDR (Tier II) testing
- Compatible with the Fluke Networks T-Pak Magnetic Meter Hanger (sold separately) for convenient hands-free positioning during testing
About Single-Mode Fiber (SM)
Single-mode fiber features a 9 µm core and 125 µm cladding, allowing only one light path to travel through the fiber. This design minimizes signal loss and dispersion, making it ideal for long-distance, high-bandwidth applications, enterprise networks, service provider environments, and modern data centers.
SC - Common 2.5mm ConnectorThe SC (Subscriber Connector or Standard Connector) uses a 2.5 mm ferrule and is easily recognized by its square shape. It features a snap-in design that mates using a push-pull action with a spring-loaded ferrule and is widely used for its low insertion loss and easy deployment.
UPC (Ultra Physical Contact) Connector PolishUPC connectors use a highly polished and rounded end face giving greater contact between the glass surfaces. This in turn reduces the amount of light reflected back.
Why Use an OTDR Launch Cable?OTDR launch cables create the necessary fiber distance between the OTDR and the link under test, allowing the instrument to accurately characterize the first and last connectors in the fiber channel. Without a launch or tail cord, these critical events can be hidden within the OTDR's dead zone, resulting in incomplete measurements. Using launch and tail cords improves visibility of near-end events and enables more accurate insertion loss and reflectance measurements.
